A STORY OF LOVE PUT TO MUSIC
Explore Kitt's musical interpretation of his experience as a child in the foster care system, being separated from his sister while in foster care, and blessed with adoptive parents. However, after 30 years of looking for his sister, he reunites with her and discovers that they’ve been living within a mile of one another for over 15 years. The adoption story comes full circle, when Kitt and his wife adopted three siblings to avoid the possibility of them being separated in different foster homes.

RANKY TANKY is especially honored to be among those nominated while representing the Gullah community - our very unique musical culture predominantly rooted within West African traditions and thriving on the coasts of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.
Gullah is a culture and language developed by Africans in America, both enslaved and free. These men, women, and children used music to transcend the horrors of daily life during slavery, and they sought hope in these melodies. We sing, so their voices aren’t lost.
Bringing Gullah music to our "sister city" and the birthplace of jazz has been one of our dreams since our inception. This new album, "Live At The 2022 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival," recorded last May during our triumphant JazzFest debut is documentation of a dream fulfilled. We had no awareness that the set was being recorded, but once we heard that the joy of that moment had been captured, we felt certain it should be shared with the world.
This album represents a pinnacle in the hundreds of shows we've played over the past few years and showcases what we do best... play live. To us, this nomination is a continuum that recognizes and celebrates the musical contributions of our Gullah ancestry.
